Holy: an attempt to explain God's holiness to a 9 year-old

People like to worship things. You could say that we are made to worship. People worship all kinds of things: athletes, super heroes, people, and animals. What makes something worth worshiping? Often times we like things that are like us but much better or more perfect. We like Super Man because, although we have strength, he’s SUPER STRONG! We like our teachers because they are SUPER SMART! We like things that are like us but more perfect. Now you and I know that nothing on this earth is perfect. So here’s a question: have you ever met something or someone who was perfect? Personally, I’ve never met the perfect cow or the perfect person. But if you did, wouldn’t that- and that alone- be worthy of all your worship?

Everything we encounter in this life is ultimately commonplace. This is reality. There really isn’t anything special about most things and they’re certainly not perfect. If you’ve seen one Super Hero you’ve essentially seen them all. So what thing or person is truly different, truly set apart, genuinely unique, uncommon, perfect, and ultimately worthy of our fullest attention? The answer is God. God made everything you see around you. God even made you and me. He made some pretty incredible stuff! So if His ‘stuff’ is amazing, then just imagine how amazing the One who created all of this ‘stuff’ must be! Do you see how beautiful the flowers in the fields are? They’re almost perfectly beautiful. How much more beautiful God must be! In fact, He is perfectly beautiful! He is wholly perfect.

The Bible declares that God is perfect in every way and that God is unique. That is why we say that God is Holy. When we say that God is Holy we are saying that there is no one or no thing that compares to Him- not even Super Man. This is why we wholly worship God who alone is Holy and worthy of our fullest attention.
