Corrupted people can only be transformed by God’s Spirit.
I love how Dallas Willard sums up our underlying issue: “the greatest need you and I have– the greatest need of collective humanity– is renovation of our heart.” This reality should instill humility, as the one becoming like Christ is ever mindful of just how desperately we need Jesus. A posture of humility should also pervade the communal aspect of spiritual formation. Our formation occurs both individually and in community. Either alone or in community Spiritual formation is both a work of God and man, a ‘both/and’ movement towards attaining perfection. Just as our gifts from the Spirit do not work automatically (2 Tim 1:6) we also strive in sanctification to attain our great salvation (Phil 2:12-13).
